Bookstores have always been places of influence in the cultural life of a nation. As booklovers, we encounter our first books there, and they draw us back repeatedly. How do bookstores remain alive and pulsating, keeping readers, both old and new, coming back to breathe in the scent of books? Industry stalwarts who run legacy bookstores share their insights. Anuj Bahri is a second generation bookseller, heading the prestigious group companies at BAHRISONS Booksellers LLP, in Delhi, and seven other cities across India. He is also a publisher of new writings presented through a boutique list at Tara – India Research Press, and a Literary Agent at Red Ink Literary Agency, representing world titles. Mohit Batra is a third-generation bookseller and the founder of the initiative A Book is the Smartest Hand Held Device, which aims to position books as meaningful tools for children through author discussions. He has curated sessions with Sudha Murty, Vishwanathan Anand, Malcolm Gladwell, Robin Sharma, Indira Nooyi, Jeffrey Archer, and Dr. Raghuram Rajan. A gold medalist from XLRI, Jamshedpur, Mohit left a corporate career to continue his family legacy of celebrating books. He also leads the literary agency Paper Sparrows, introducing new and classic voices, believing in the power of reading to connect us to ourselves. Murali is a seasoned bookseller with over two decades of experience in the book retail industry. He currently serves as the Deputy General Manager of Retail and Procurement at Higginbothams Pvt. Ltd., the iconic 180-year-old bookstore chain headquartered in Chennai, with a presence across three states. Before joining Higginbothams, Murali spent ten years with Landmark, a bookselling career he entered by chance but went on to embrace with passion. His deep industry insight, commitment to readers, and lifelong dedication to books continue to shape his distinguished journey in the world of literature and retail. Nijesh Shah is the Group President and Director of Sapna Book House, India’s largest bookstore chain, and the country’s leading regional-language publisher, recognized by the Limca and India Book of Records. Passionate about making books accessible, he launched SapnaOnline.com, SapnaInk, Diyara Press, and SapnaRise—platforms that make books available through e-commerce, empower authors through self-publishing, and connect readers with writers worldwide through author events and author podcast. Sapna has published over 8,000 titles, with a strong presence in Kannada and academic publishing, and operates over twenty four flagship bookstores. Swati Daftuar is an independent journalist, editor, and literary consultant. She is Consulting Editor at Speaking Tiger, commissioning fiction, translations, and idea-driven non-fiction. Previously, she served as Executive Editor at HarperCollins India and Deputy Editor at The Hindu, and she founded Delhi’s community-led Annual Book & Bake Sale. She also hosts The Bookshop Inc. Book Clubs and writes on books and culture for Scroll and The Hindu. Her first novel is set to be published by HarperCollins India in 2026.
