The body camera footage released earlier this week of Tashii Brown (he was initially identified by police and the media as "Tashii Farmer") being tased seven times and then choked to death on the Las Vegas Strip by LVMPD Officer Kenneth Lopera. In spite of numerous references within their press conference to "the suspect," Farmer was not actually suspected of having committed any crime. He initially approached Ofc. Lopera to ask for help and stated he thought someone was chasing him. Soon after, he was in fact being chased by Lopera. That chase ended in the parking garage where Lopera proceeded to tase Farmer at least seven times, punch him repeatedly, and then finally put him in a choke-hold until he was dead. In spite of initial reports that this choke-hold was a "department approved neck restraint" the rear naked choke that Lopera used to kill Farmer is actually not authorized. The excuse that he was attempting to carjack the driver of a nearby truck was based on the fact that Farmer touched the tailgate when he paused briefly while running. The idea that he was attempting a carjacking was also contradicted by the driver of the truck, who stated he never thought Farmer was attempting to carjack or otherwise attack him. Also, there were initially at least two security guards from The Venetian Las Vegas Casino helping hold Farmer down before Lopera decided to begin choking him to death. In addition, shortly after at least three additional Metro cops arrived. So there were at least half a dozen security and police officers in addition to Ofc. Lopera that could have subdued a man who had already been tased multiple times and was not attempting to aggressively assault anyone (including all of those officers) at any time during the entire video.
