Why Are There No Hyenas in North America? The hyena is an animal that generates both fear and fascination. With their bone-cracking jaws, high intelligence, and tightly knit social bonds, they are formidable predators, capable of taking down prey much larger than themselves and outwitting competitors. Most people immediately picture them roaming the African plains, scavenging around lions or stalking wildebeest. And that’s true: today, three species inhabit Africa, while the striped hyena extends into the Middle East, the Caucasus, Central Asia, and India. But surprisingly, hyenas also once lived in North America. Fossil evidence shows that they were an integral part of the continent’s fauna for thousands of years.
