When the flower is heated through processes like smoking, vaping, or cooking, THCA undergoes decarboxylation and converts into THC, creating the well-known "high" associated with cannabis. Because THCA is not intoxicating on its own, and because it is derived from hemp and contains less than 0.3% Delta-9 THC by dry weight, THCA flower remains federally legal under the 2018 Federal Farm Bill. In 2025, the legal status of THCA varies significantly by state, with some states having broad restrictions or outright bans, while others generally permit it.
