Optimum age at first calving is 22-26 months in oreder to increase survivability into subsequent lactations. This in turn increases lifetime yield and profitability while reducing the methane that older calving and surplus heifers would produce. To ensure heifers are cycling and go in calf they need to be at the target weights before breeding. Teagasc/ Dairygold Signpost farmers Sean & Pat Barry have seen the benefit of weighing heifers since they bought a weighing scales over 10 years ago. As standard practice they weigh the heifers after housing and pen them accordingly. The different groups can be fed depending on their weight & silage quality to maximise growth over the winter. Weighing again in mid/late January allows them to monitor progress & adjust the feed rates for the different groups.
