Even among these, some are used a lot more often than others. The Chinese standard GB2312-80 was created based on this pattern. GB2312-80 is a system created in 1980 by the Chinese government to standardize how simplified Chinese characters are stored and shared on computers. "GB" stands for "Guo biao," meaning "national standard" in Chinese （国家标准）. This system splits characters into two groups: the first group has 3,755 common characters, and the second group has 3,008 less common ones. Together, these two groups have 6,763 characters. The characters in the first group make up 99.7% of what we use. In other words, out of every 10,000 characters you come across in modern Chinese, 9,970 will be from the first group, while the rest will be used very rarely. The 1,000 most common characters are used over 90% of the time. According to the National Publishing Bureau, there are 560 very common Chinese characters, 807 common characters, and 1033 less common ones. Altogether, these 2400 characters make up 99% of the words in regular books and magazines.
