Artisan Profile: A Cotswolds Weaver, Rebecca Connolly

A profile video of a Cotswold weaver Rebecca Connolly. We asked her how she starts a project and what inspires her creativity. Rebecca says she ‘feels' her Welsh heritage deeply even though she has lived in the West Country for most of her life. It has subliminally directed her developing practice as a Woven Textile Designer and Hand-weaver; inspired to design “useful and beautiful" textiles with bold patterning but also influencing her choice of materials, techniques and processes as well. Interior textiles are her preference; from flat-weave rugs to fine cloth for light soft furnishings. Using British wool in it’s natural colour or dyed whenever practical with colour she extracts from plants, distinctive geometric patterns are developed on her vintage looms through extensive sampling. She has worked from her studio in the Cotswolds since graduating in 2015 with a BA in Textile Design for Fashion & Interiors from Bath Spa University. From the graduate work exhibited at New Designers, Rebecca was invited by the historic Society of Designer Craftsmen to take up a Licentiate membership. Following success in the prestigious Bradford Textile Society Design competition, Rebecca has continued to collaborate with British Wool; running weave workshops, demonstrating on their stand at Decorex International and exhibiting at The Campaign for Wool’s 5th Anniversary showcase at Southwark Cathedral. Rebecca will continue designing and hand-weaving pieces for exhibition and competitions alongside her hand-woven bespoke cloth for private commissions. She also develops new weave designs for retailers and commercial clients, collaborating with specialist wool yarn producers and artisan weaving mills.
