Former Member of Parliament Geoffrey Mwilima died this morning at age 70. According to the family spokesperson, Cedric Limbo, Mwilima died in Lady Pohamba Private Hospital. Mwilima was admitted on Friday for cardiac-related issues. He was awaiting an operation on Thursday morning but died from complications before the procedure. Dr Limbo confirmed the death was due to an acute myocardial infarction caused by decreased or complete cessation of blood flow. Malima had been convicted of high treason in 2015 for his involvement in the armed secessionist attacks on government in the then Caprivi Region, now known as the Zambezi Region. At the time of his arrest in 1999, he was 43 years old and sentenced to 15 years' imprisonment following a guilty verdict. Mwilima was released from prison on 24 December last year after being granted remission of sentence by the Namibia Correctional Service. He was serving the remaining five years at home under supervised conditions. Mwilima, who is survived by his wife and eight children, is said to have spent his days post-prison with immediate and extended family, especially his grandchildren, narrating the history of his bloodline, including the history of the Zambezi region. In addition, the family said, 'He looked forward to being a full-time farmer, a hobby that he reportedly had never forgotten even after 27 years in prison.'
