I'm Shauna Levy and I'm a bariatric surgeon and I am the director of the Tulane Bariatric Center. What is your approach to patient care? It's really giving them the power to change their own lives. For instance, one of my patients emailed me recently because he was ecstatic that he no longer needed to use a seat belt extender on an airplane and he said it was the first time in forever that he can remember that he didn't have to use that. And he was just so elated and that excitement was passed on to me. How do you gain your patient's trust? One of the things that we really prioritize is support groups in our center because you know I can talk and talk and talk and patients can learn a lot from me but they can learn even more from other patients who have gone through the surgical process. So we offer at least monthly support groups and then the other various avenues for patients to get together and talk among themselves. They can learn from the experiences they've had and grow together. We value that as being something extremely important. What is most rewarding about your job? Sometimes being a physician can be challenging. There is so many non-exciting things that we do, but the excitement that I feel for my patients really drives me to keep working harder, to keep learning, to keep becoming better at what I'm doing and I could never do that if I didn't have such amazing patients.
