What is the hyoid bone? We are going to learn all about hyoid bone anatomy in this lecture. Going into the hyoid bone definition, location, structure, function and anatomical features, interesting facts, and most importantly, the muscle and ligaments. So, watch this fun lecture and maximize your learning! ▬ 🕘 TIMESTAMPS 0:00 - What is Hyoid Bone? 0:45 - Name origin of Hyoid bone? 1:07 - What makes Hyoid bone unique? 1:41 - Muscle attachments of Hyoid bone 2:09 - Other names of Hyoid bone 2:18 - Functions of Hyoid bone 2:52 - Bone anatomy landmarks 3:26 - Link to Hyoid Bone Anatomy Lecture ▬ 📌 Hyoid bone What does the word ”hyoid” mean? It finds its origin in the Greek word ”hyoeides”, meaning ‘Shaped like the letter upsilon’. It clearly shows it is named so because it is U-shaped. You must also remember that the mandible was also U-shaped. You can watch all about that bone in our previous lecture here. ▬ 📌 Location of the Hyoid bone The hyoid bone is present between the lower jaw i.e. your mandible and the larynx. Surgeons use this bone as a reference point to locate the 3rd cervical, which is present on the posterior side of the hyoid bone. It is said to be approximately 3cm below the angle of the mandible. ▬ 📌 Peculiar Facts about Hyoid Bone Firstly, it is the only bone present in the anterior neck. Secondly, it is the only bone in the body that does not articulate with any other bone directly. It is connected with other bony structures only through many muscles and ligaments. This is why it is also termed as a “free-floating” bone. ▬ 📌 Anatomical Landmarks of Hyoid Bone To study it thoroughly we divide the hyoid bone into 3 main parts. The Body 🟠 Greater Horns (greater cornua) 🟠 Lesser Horns (lesser cornua) ▬ 📌 Functions of Hyoid Bone Provides support since it carries the weight of the tongue. Which is why it is also called the lingual bone or tongue bone. Facilitates the movement of the jaw, allowing us to speak, breathe, and swallow. It also keeps the upper airway open during sleep. ▬ 📌 Attachments of Hyoid bone Hyoid bone has 3 types of attachments. 🟠 Muscles- Several muscles find attachment to the hyoid bone. Watch the lecture to learn all of them. 🟠 Ligaments- Stylohyoid and Hyoepiglottic ligaments 🟠 Thyrohyoid membrane ▬ 🎬 5500+ sqadia.com Medical Videos ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ 👩🏻⚕️ Accessible Medical Student Education 24/7/365 💡 Simplifying Medical Learning 💪 Study Hard, Dream Big, Achieve More #anatomy #larynx #anatomyoflarynx #larynxanatomy #skeletalsystem #humananatomyandphysiology #humananatomymadesimple #anatomyandphysiology
