The western United States (WUS) water cycle is defined by its mountains and the water cycle processes they shape. Over the last century, the WUS mountainous hydroclimate has transformed considerably. These transformations undermine some of the natural functions mountains provide, such as their ability to reliably replenish water supplies at times of peak demand, which societies have come to expect. In this talk, I will discuss how the WUS' mountainous hydroclimate has changed and could continue to change in the coming decades using multiple lines of evidence (i.e., models, observations, and theory). This talk will also highlight science-based solutions to be proactive, rather than reactive, to mountainous water cycle changes that critically shape resource management and flood planning.
