Moses, having come down from Mount Sinai, and seeing Israel had gone off into idolatry, had some bad news for them: yes, they would still get to go to the promised land, but even though they repented, God wouldn't travel in their midst. So serious was God's view of idolatry, that Moses set up a tabernacle outside the camp. What tabernacle was this, and what did he do there?
