The 1977 South African Grand Prix began with James Hunt making the perfect launch from pole position, his McLaren leaping ahead while Niki Lauda quickly slotted in behind at Crowthorne. Carlos Pace, caught napping at the lights, fell back, losing ground to Jody Scheckter and Patrick Depailler, while Vittorio Brambilla’s March stayed stuck on the grid with clutch failure. Tom Pryce also faltered at the start, leaving both him and Brambilla fighting from the rear, chasing even Larry Perkins’ struggling BRM. Up front, Hunt led Lauda through the opening laps, the two soon pulling clear of Scheckter, Depailler and Pace. Behind them, Mario Andretti and Jochen Mass fought hard, while Ronnie Peterson retired early with fuel pressure problems. By lap six Lauda’s Ferrari showed its pace, blasting past Hunt into Crowthorne to take control. The Austrian steadily built a gap as Hunt slipped back into the clutches of Scheckter. The Wolf driver was relentless, and by lap 15 he forced his way past Hunt after the Brit hesitated lapping Perkins’ BRM. Hunt regained third, but Lauda was long gone, controlling the race. Yet just as the order began to settle, the afternoon took a horrific turn. On lap 22 Renzo Zorzi’s Shadow stopped at the top of the main straight with a split fuel pipe. Fuel sprayed onto hot exhausts and briefly ignited, forcing the Italian to scramble out. Two young marshals—William and 19-year-old Frederik Jansen van Vuuren—ran across the track to assist, believing it clear. At that moment, Hans-Joachim Stuck and Tom Pryce crested the rise side by side. Stuck swerved at the last instant, but Pryce, hidden directly behind, had no chance to react. Traveling at 270 km/h, Pryce struck van Vuuren head-on. The marshal was killed instantly, his body hurled aside with such force that race control initially struggled to identify who was missing. Pryce, meanwhile, was fatally struck by van Vuuren’s heavy fire extinguisher, which smashed into his helmet, killing him instantly. His Shadow continued uncontrolled, colliding with Jacques Laffite’s Ligier before crashing into the barriers. Laffite escaped with bruises, but the scene was one of devastation—two lives lost in a split second. Pryce’s body remained in the cockpit for the remainder of the race, while marshals hastily covered van Vuuren’s remains nearby. Despite the tragedy, the race carried on. Lauda carefully navigated the wreckage, though debris damaged his Ferrari’s cooling system, forcing him to manage engine temperatures. Scheckter pressed hard but could not break Lauda’s rhythm. Depailler eventually forced his way past Hunt for third with a bold move at Crowthorne, while Mass fended off Watson in the closing laps. Lauda, nursing an ailing Ferrari low on oil, still reached the flag first, followed by Scheckter and Depailler. Hunt finished fourth, ahead of Mass and Watson. Yet results seemed hollow. The shocking accident that claimed Pryce and van Vuuren overshadowed everything, leaving the 1977 South African Grand Prix remembered not for Lauda’s controlled drive, but for one of Formula 1’s darkest tragedies.
