Dental disease is extremely common in both dogs and cats. Even mild disease can cause them pain and lead to other problems and we, as pet owners, are all too often ignorant about the problems. Any dog or cat with dental disease needs to have their teeth properly cleaned under anaesthetic. Adult dogs should have 42 teeth and adult cats have 30 teeth. You cannot check all these teeth properly without an anaesthetic and taking dental x-rays to check the 50%+ of the tooth that is hidden under the gums. After assessing the teeth, they need to be cleaned with an ultrasonic scaler and then polished properly. Can you see the difference? After the teeth are cleaned, they need daily attention or they will get dirty again. That is why we brush our teeth twice a day.
