Y-20B: Latest Chinese military aircraft revealed, with copied CFM56 engine - WS-20 turbofan

A photo surfaced online ChineseY-20 transport aircraft is now flying with 4 domestically developed WS-20 turbofan engines. The variant with WS-20 engines is likely named Y-20B. Previously Y-20s are powered by Russian D30 turbofan, same as IL-76. WS-20 translates into "Turbofan 20". A photo shows ceremony of WS-20 first test flight by China Flight Test Establishment. The testbed is a modified IL-76 aircraft. WS-20 is believed to be Chinese copied French-American CFM56 turbofan engine. WS-20 can greatly increase efficiency of Y-20, increasing its range and payload in real-world practice. CFM56 was imported by China as civilian powerplant for airliners, it has now been turned into fighter jet WS-10 engine, and WS-20 for larger aircrafts, possibly powering Chinese designed airliners in future, like CR929. Visually WS-20 is much larger than less-efficient D30 turbofans due to the size of much larger high-bypass fans at the front. To boost fuel economy, almost all of modern airliners and most military transport aircraft adopt high-bypass-ratio turbofans. These engines are improved greatly comparing low-bypass-ratio turbofans used in such aircraft before 1970s. Fighters mostly tend to use low-bypass turbofans, while transport aircraft opt for efficiency. WS-20 will also help Y-20B significantly when loaded with main battle tanks, such as 99A tank, to achieve better range and handling, making the aircraft a lot more practical to suit Chinese military strategical air transport requirement. Original Y-20 can easily load 99A tank, improvement comparing Russian IL-76 which requires removing side skirts of T-72 or T-80. WS-20 also makes Y-20B more flexible in terms of cargo combination options, better weight arrangement, and climb rate. It is also important WS10, WS20, and future civilian turbofan will provide Chinese aviation industry a reliable powerplant family to build on, not only support new aircraft designs, but also as a starting point of the latest generation turbofan engines. It is believed that next generation fighter jet engine WS-15 is already in test flights, and WS-20 successor is in design stage. Y-20s with D30 engines have been carrying out various overseas missions, the latest one is humanitarian flight to Tonga. And also military exercise in Russia.
