Bleeding gums can be caused by a number of factors, including: Gum disease: The most common cause of bleeding gums is plaque buildup at the gum line, which can lead to gingivitis, or inflamed gums. Symptoms include gums that are red, swollen, tender, and bleed easily, especially when brushing or flossing. If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, a more advanced form of gum disease that can cause loose teeth, bad breath, and receding gums. Medications: Some medications, such as blood thinners like warfarin, aspirin, and heparin, can increase the risk of bleeding gums. Vitamin deficiency: A deficiency in vitamins C and K can cause gums to become weak and more likely to bleed. Other health issues: Bleeding gums can also be a sign of hormone fluctuations, blood-clotting disorders, HIV/AIDS, cancer treatments, or eating disorders. Dentures: Dentures that fit too tightly can cause bleeding gums. Brushing habits: Brushing too hard or too often can cause bleeding gums.
