The ancient city became one of the main Etruscan ports, later passing to the ancient Greeks who called it Adria, a name that indicated daylight. Christianity arrived in the 2nd century brought by the bishop of Ravenna and became so important that the first church was raised to the status of cathedral of the new diocese.
