Sometimes the best way to grow as an artist is to tackle the things you struggle with head-on. For me, that’s 1-minute figure drawings. I can barely get through a 5-minute sketch, so squeezing an entire gesture drawing into just 60 seconds feels nearly impossible. But gesture drawing is one of the best exercises to improve observational skills, understand proportions, simplify complex forms, and capture the flow and balance of a pose. So, I challenged myself to complete 100 gesture drawings in 100 minutes—knowing full well that I might fail along the way. In this video, I share the ups and downs of my drawing challenge: back pain, scribble-circle experiments, unfinished torsos, and little sparks of progress that give me hope. You’ll see my raw practice, my mistakes, and the small victories that come with pushing through frustration. If you’ve ever wondered whether 1-minute figure drawings are worth it (or if you just need encouragement to keep practicing your art), this video is for you. Stick around to see how my sketches evolved, what I learned along the way, and why I believe that anyone can develop their artistic talent with enough practice and persistence. I'm on a mission to inspire and encourage people to learn the things they've always wanted to learn, and pursue the opportunities and experiences they have always wanted to pursue by proving, one project at a time, that it is possible to learn new things, and getting started might take less time than you think!
