Pure and beautiful, with a hint of lively wildness, she was loved by three men: the young hunter Wang Huai, the county magistrate Zhang Zixian, and Wang Dun, the elder brother of Wang Huai and a high-ranking general returning home from the capital. Wang Huai, though intelligent, was aimless in his youth, not ambitious despite Xiang'er's affections. In a fit of pique, he left for the frontier to join the military, leading to their separation with lingering thoughts. Zhang Zixian, a charming and powerful county magistrate, faced rejection from Xiang'er due to his abuse of power. Wang Dun, having left his hometown for military service in his youth, held feelings for Xiang'er but never revealed them. Upon learning that Xiang'er's parents had arranged her marriage to Wang Huai, he withdrew, treating her with only protective care as love. During the grand palace selection event, Xiang'er, renowned for her beauty, was chosen. Wang Dun and Zhang Zixian, each wanting to protect their love, tried various methods to help Xiang'er escape impending danger. In the midst of the conflicting "loves" of the three men, Xiang'er had a bold idea: "The Emperor, at least, has some courage, and doesn't have to worry about what his family thinks." With determination, she volunteered to enter the palace, taking on the name Zhaojun. However, upon entering the palace, she faced jealousy from the palace women, sabotage from Mao Yanshou, and schemes from the Empress, leading to her isolation in the cold palace. In the year 33 BC, with the Han and Xiongnu dynasties burdened by three centuries of animosity, Xiongnu proposed peace; the Emperor, pleased, agreed. The Empress, reluctant to send her own daughter far away, suggested the Emperor choose a maiden from the palace to be given in marriage. No one dared to respond until Zhaojun, in the cold palace, resolutely accepted. Before leaving for the Xiongnu, Zhaojun learned the Xiongnu language and customs from her tutor. When she finally met the Emperor, he was amazed by her beauty, admired her wisdom, and was moved by her sense of duty, wanting to keep her by his side as a concubine. However, Zhaojun expressed her principles, saying, "I have lived in my hometown for over ten years without being married, and have found it difficult to meet the Emperor in the palace for many years. At this moment, I have decided to marry the Xiongnu leader. This is my choice." Ultimately persuading the Emperor, she departed. As the beloved "Ning Hu Eshi" of the Xiongnu leader, Zhaojun, in the court of the Xiongnu, demonstrated her wisdom, courage, and virtue in upholding justice. She embraced the Xiongnu customs, spread Han culture, assisted in governing, resolved internal disputes among the Xiongnu, and aided in times of war and nomadic migrations. She earned unwavering respect from the three Han men who deeply loved her—Wang Dun, Wang Huai, and Zhang Zixian—until the Xiongnu leader's passing. Following Xiongnu customs, she remarried and bore children, dedicating her life to Han-Xiongnu harmony. Zhaojun passed away at the age of fifty in the Xiongnu court, where a grand tomb was built for her. The tomb, called the "Green Mound," remained lush with grass, unaffected by animals or weather, symbolizing her enduring legacy.
