Various of Garcia Marquez attending an award ceremony STORYLINE A new biography of Nobel Prize winning author Gabriel Garcia Marquez was launched in Mexico on Monday. At a news conference in Mexico City, British-born biographer Gerald Martin told the audience that Marquez triumphed in the face of hardship, having earned a scholarship as a boy in his native Columbia, which gave him the chance to study in high school and pursue his dream of writing. "Garcia Marquez won a scholarship and leapt through that window of opportunity a little bit like Alice entering into Wonderland or into magical realism," Martin said. "Garcia Marquez is without doubt, a genius," he told the audience. Martin spent 18 years researching his subject, and was able to win Marquez's blessing for the project, although the author was not present at the launch event. Marquez himself has written his own autobiography, "Living to Tell the Tale", which was first published in 2002. Marquez was the eldest of 16 children, born in Aracataca, a small Colombian town in the Magdalena province. For decades, the beloved author has made his home in Mexico City, with frequent visits to Havana, Cuba, where he is a close friend of fellow octogenarian Fidel Castro. He began his career as a journalist, going on to become a foreign correspondent and political activist and author. His short stories and novels brought him significant critical acclaim and widespread commercial success and he went on to win the Nobel prize for literature in 1982. Marquez's epic novel "100 Years of Solitude" introduced the world both to his native village and to the style of "magical realism," in which fantastic events are made to appear ordinary.
