Dr. Vivek Sasindran, Consultant ENT, Head and Neck Surgeon Today, we will discuss Adenoids and Adenoid Hypertrophy, a common health issue among children that causes inflammation of the Adenoid gland. Adenoids are lymphoid tissues that are part of our immune system, located in the backmost part of our nasal passage. Tonsils are also lymphoid tissues like adenoids and belong to the same family, but they are located in the throat. Parents often ask if Adenoid Hypotrophy is a disease. However, it is a common condition among growing children, where the gland enlarges, leading to difficulty breathing through the nose. This causes children to breathe through their mouth, even when they are idly sitting, and might cause snoring during sleep. Children might adopt abnormal sleep postures to help them breathe, leading to frequent awakenings and restless sleep. Eventually, mouth breathing can cause proclined teeth and facial changes, leading to a peculiar facial appearance called adenoid facies. Additionally, some children might experience hearing loss and not respond to calls or listen well in class. To confirm Adenoid Hypotrophy, two options are available, one of which is nasal endoscopy, which might not be supportive for small children.
