Whenever someone in the household has diarrhea, the first question we all ask is: what should they eat and what should they avoid? The most important priorities are to prevent dehydration and to give the gut a chance to rest. Start with plenty of fluids — small, frequent sips of water, oral rehydration solution (ORS), or clear broths are best. Avoid sugary drinks, sodas, and undiluted fruit juices because they can make diarrhea worse. If you have access to ORS packets, use them as directed to replace lost salts and fluids. For food, follow mild, easy-to-digest choices: plain boiled rice, toast or plain crackers, bananas, applesauce, and plain boiled potatoes. These low-fibre, bland foods (often called the BRAT-style approach) help firm stools and are gentle on the stomach. You can also offer plain yogurt with live cultures after symptoms start to improve, as probiotics sometimes help restore healthy gut bacteria — but avoid flavored or sugary yogurts. Avoid fatty, fried, spicy, or very rich foods, as well as dairy (other than plain yogurt) while symptoms are ongoing, because these can irritate the gut. Also skip caffeine, alcohol, and high-fiber foods such as raw vegetables, beans, and whole grains until recovery begins. If vomiting is present, give only small sips of clear fluids until vomiting eases, then gradually reintroduce bland foods. Watch for warning signs that need medical attention: very high fever, blood in stools, signs of severe dehydration (very little urine, dizziness, dry mouth), diarrhea lasting more than 48–72 hours in adults (sooner for infants or elderly), or if the person is very weak or confused. For infants, elderly people, or those with chronic illnesses, contact a healthcare provider early. These simple steps usually help most mild cases recover at home quickly while keeping the person safe and comfortable. ..
