Attila Szűcs (*1967) is one of the most prominent figures in contemporary Hungarian painting. He was first introduced to Czech audiences in 2013 at the group exhibition Nightfall at Prague’s Rudolfinum, curated by Jane Neal, where his works were shown alongside acclaimed artists such as Adrian Ghenie (RO), Neo Rauch (DE), and Daniel Pitín (CZ). His work has also been presented at Museum Kampa and the Aleš South Bohemian Gallery. The exhibition The Legacy of Absence offers a powerful insight into Szűcs’s distinctive figurative painting, where reality blurs with dreamlike visions and a sense of melancholic stillness. Some of his works draw inspiration from the internet phenomenon known as “planking,” where individuals remain motionless in strange locations. Szűcs transforms this idea into a visual dialogue between movement and stillness. His paintings are marked by muted tones and radiant color auras—pulses of energy and force that surround figures and objects—creating a mysterious, almost hypnotic atmosphere.
