Next Video (Story of Bhopal Princely State) : Will be uploaded soon (Stay tuned) Previous Video (Integration of princely states_Background) : • (1/7) How India became united? The st... In this series of 7 videos, I will talk about the princely states (#PrincelyStates) and their rulers/princes (#rulersofbritishindia), provinces of British India(#provinces #britishindia), Congress party and their efforts in making a united India of today. In this 2nd video, I have talked about the princely state of #Travancore. Its importance for the Indian Union due to its strategic geographical location', what were the challenges it imposed before Sardar Patel and the Indian Union and how it got dissolved in Indian Union. Travancore was the first princely state to question the right of the Congress to succeed the British as the paramount power. The state was strategically placed, at the extreme southern tip of the subcontinent. It had the most highly educated populace in India, a thriving maritime trade, and newly discovered reserves of monazite, from which is extracted thorium, used in the production of atomic energy and atomic bombs. The dewan of Travancore was Sir C. P. Ramaswamy Aiyar, a brilliant and ambitious lawyer who had been in his post for sixteen years. It was commonly believed that he was the real ruler of the state, whose maharaja and maharani was like putty in his hands. All the contents of this video have been taken from the newspapers and the letters of that time or from the book "India After Gandhi" (#IndiaAfterGandhi) by famous Indian Historian Ramchandra Guha (#Ramchandra Guha).
