Loaded with car parts, an Airbus A340-600(F) from European Cargo arrived in Basel today for the first time. This flight marked three premieres for Basel: 1. It was the first scheduled flight with an A340-600 to Basel, 2. it was European Cargo's first visit to Basel, and 3. it was the first landing of an Airbus A340-600(F) in Basel. The Airbus A340-600 is unique to European Cargo; these are passenger aircraft that were temporarily converted into freighters during the COVID-19 pandemic. European Cargo developed a system to use the A340-600 as a freighter, even though it lacks a cargo door. The aircraft are equipped with boxes for loading cargo and have a fireproof partition between the cargo hold and the crew area. Since the cabin is not designed for cargo, there is no sliding floor, and the cargo must be moved manually using special mobile rollers. It's a bit cumbersome, but it seems to be worth it.
