This workshop session is part of the Russian Flagship Teacher Training Workshops at Indiana University held in April 2021. Led by William Comer, Professor of Russian at Portland State University, this workshop session considers the kinds of reading skills a learner needs to develop to become an effective independent reader, and how long curricular sequences give learners opportunities to develop such skills. The session examines in detail the text matrix as one specific instructional technique that can be implemented at different instructional levels. Participants during the live session had a chance to try to complete and build such a text matrix in small groups. The session also looks at some additional online resources that can provide guided extensive reading for students of Russian.
