The City is part of Greater London, but is not one of the 32 London boroughs. The City is within the city, however, it is a city in itself. It has its own government and mayor. The city is nicknamed the Square Mile because its area is 1.12 miles (2.9 km²). The boundary of the City of London is the Thames on one side and then, starting from the Tower of London in the east, extends to the Middle Temple on the Embankment. Not only is the City home to iconic monuments such as St Paul's Cathedral and Tower Bridge, it is also filled with a tangle of alleyways that are always rewarding to stroll through.
