Film Premiere from SavingGanesh.org! Mahasen, “Ancient King” is a venerable tusker elephant in Sri Lanka. He is renown for his crossed tusks. He got into a battle with a straight-tusked bull and not surprisingly, he was at a disadvantage and suffered a deep puncture wound to his backside. Dr. Chandana Jayasinghe, wildlife veterinarian/surgeon and his team from the Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC) must track, dart tranquilize and then treat this sacred bull on a weekly basis until cured. This is a hugely risky activity for which we thoroughly document in our film. This is real action from the front lines of elephant conservation - I hope you will watch and have greater appreciation for the wildlife heroes that do much, and for nearly starvation wages. The vets and rangers of the DWC are wildlife heroes and are given little respect for the great risks they partake on a regular basis. News journalists too often misplace blame for elephant incursions, crop raiding and tramplings upon these rangers, when they are underfunded and misdirected by the elected powers above them. Too many rangers have died. I’ve been witness to too many injuries and deaths of my ranger friends going back to 1998. These rangers are too often called to duty to perform the deeds that they themselves are loath to do, and too often unnecessarily put into harms way. Hero Rangers. There’s only 85-100 tuskers in the whole of Sri Lankan, being only 5 percent of the bull elephant population. Mahasen is originally from the Somawathiya Park area but likely battled with others from Kalawewa - an area known to have the largest population of tuskers, and where battles are more frequent. This film documents the second antibiotic treatment given in 2 weeks’ time, and Mahasen is already showing improvement. Open wounds like this are surprisingly susceptible to mortal infection.
