It was built as a symbol of national pride and unity. The construction started in 1960 and was completed in 1962, during the presidency of Soekarno, Indonesia’s first president — that’s why the stadium is named after him. The main purpose of building GBK was to host the 4th Asian Games in 1962, which took place in Jakarta. The project was a major part of President Soekarno’s vision to show Indonesia’s progress and capability to the world after gaining independence. The stadium was designed by Friedrich Silaban, one of Indonesia’s most famous architects, known for his modern and monumental designs. GBK was one of the largest stadiums in the world at that time, with a capacity of over 100,000 people. Originally, the stadium had a very unique feature — a massive roof ring called “temu gelang”, which covered the stands and was considered a great engineering achievement for its time. Over the years, GBK has hosted many international sports events, concerts, and national ceremonies. It was renovated several times, most recently for the 2018 Asian Games, making it more modern, comfortable, and environmentally friendly, while keeping its historic architecture. TUKU KOPI TUKO Kopi Tuku (also called Tuku Coffee) is one of the most popular local coffee brands in Indonesia, especially in Jakarta. It started as a small coffee shop in Cipete, South Jakarta, founded by Kori Azmi and his team. The idea was simple — to make good-quality coffee that everyone can afford, not just expensive café-style drinks. Their most famous drink is the “Es Kopi Susu Tuku”, a sweet iced coffee with milk and palm sugar (gula aren). It became a massive trend in Jakarta — even President Joko Widodo and his family once visited the shop, making it even more popular. You can find Kopi Tuku branches in several areas around Jakarta, including GBK (Gelora Bung Karno). The atmosphere is usually very lively, especially in the evening when people come after work or after jogging at GBK. It’s a must-try if you want to experience authentic Indonesian-style coffee — simple, sweet, and refreshing ☕🇮🇩
