Enjoy this recording of our online event, No-Till Hemp at Astarte Farm, a 100 percent no-till, no-spray, certified organic market garden. Since 2000, Astarte Farm has prioritized soil health and sustainability in their mission to deliver tasty, high-quality fruits and vegetables. Astarte Farm grows multiple strains of hemp for cannabinoid production in partnership with Heritage Hemp LLC. We learn from Dan and Amelia about their no-till hemp cultivation practices and how hemp fits into their farm’s goal to build healthy soil. Heritage Hemp LLC is a local processor that works with local farms to produce high-quality small batch CBD products. Josh from Heritage Hemp LLC speaks about their harvesting practices and processing facilities. We hear about how they partner with local hemp growers and are developing strains of hemp suitable to our New England climate. About Astarte Farm: In 2015 Astarte Farm began transitioning to become one of the first 100 percent no-till commercial farms in the area, and since then, has continued to explore what it means to "grow sustainably". Astarte now uses occultation, solarization, pollinator habitats, crop rotation, companion planting, cover crop “cocktails”, paper mulches, grown-in-place mulches, and more, in its inclusive approach to organic farming. The farm continues to gain recognition for its high-quality produce, which can be found at various markets and restaurants throughout the Pioneer Valley. About the Instructors: Dan Pratt is the founder and former owner of Astarte, and a longtime organic vegetable grower. Amelia Mead is Co-Farm/Business Manager at Astarte farm. Having spent the last several years traveling around the world and working on various organic farms, and owning her own pop-up restaurant on the coast of Ecuador, Amelia has returned to the Pioneer Valley to...yup, you guessed it...help run her father's farm! Josh Turner has over 25 years of cannabis cultivation experience. Backed by a BSc in Biology and Chemistry, a MSc in Genetics, he has created many award winning cannabis and hemp cultivars. He has conducted research on hemp as a phytoremediator and used hemp to remediate heavy metal contaminated soils that were deemed hazardous by the USEPA. He currently owns and operates Yellowhammer Genetics LLC and is working at Massachusetts-based Heritage Hemp LLC to develop new hemp varieties with high terpene levels and unique chemotypes.
