Jan Rader went from working in a jewelry store to becoming West Virginia's first female fire chief — and one of the most recognized voices in America's fight against the opioid crisis. In this episode of From Prevention to Recovery with Marcel Gemme, Jan shares how a woman's cardiac arrest in the doorway of her store changed her life, why Huntington, West Virginia became known as the "Overdose Capital of America," and what it really takes to save lives when your fire department is responding to more overdose calls than fires. Named one of TIME Magazine's 100 Most Influential People in 2018 and featured in the Oscar-nominated Netflix documentary Heroin(e), Jan spent 27+ years with the Huntington Fire Department — eventually leading it as fire chief. With dual training as a nurse and paramedic, she brought a perspective no one else had and pioneered programs like the Quick Response Team that helped cut overdoses by 40% and overdose deaths by 50%. Now serving as Director of Huntington's Mayor's Council on Public Health and Drug Control Policy, Jan continues leading the fight with the same philosophy she's carried from day one: treat every person with dignity and respect, no matter what. 🔔 Subscribe for more conversations with the people on the frontlines of substance use prevention and recovery. 📌 ABOUT THE GUEST Jan Rader is the Director of the Huntington Mayor's Council on Public Health and Drug Control Policy in Huntington, West Virginia.
