The Workers’ Party is proud to announce the public launch of its much-anticipated documentary film, 后港 Hougang: The Documentary, which coincides with The Workers’ Party’s 67th anniversary, commemorating its role as one of Singapore’s oldest political institutions since its founding on 3 November 1957. The film celebrates Hougang’s rich history and highlights its significant role in Singapore's political and cultural landscape. Work on 后港 Hougang: The Documentary began in 2021, but with post-production only recently completed, this timely release has now become possible. The film provides a compelling narrative of Hougang's evolution through the voices of its residents—both past and present—and features insights from historians, politicians, academics, and grassroots volunteers. It traces the journey of Hougang from its origins as a settlement of Teochew immigrants from China who first arrived to Singapore during the eighteenth century, via Pulau Ubin, eventually settling in "Hougang," meaning "the harbour in the back" in Chinese. The documentary serves not only as a reflection of Hougang’s heritage but also as a broader chronicle of Singapore’s history over the decades. Synopsis of the Film Chapter 1: Au Kang starts off by tracing the journeys of Teochew immigrants since the middle of the eighteenth century, from China to the Riau Islands, onward to Pulau Ubin in Singapore and then Hougang. Named after “the harbour in the back” in Chinese, Au Kang was characterised by its proximity to the sea. The people of Hougang worked as fishermen and farmers, and it was said that a Hougang person could tell the freshness of fish with one look. Chapter 2: Hougang New Town focuses on the personal responses of the Hougang people to state-led urbanisation, land acquisition and relocation in the 1980s. Many former kampung residents in Hougang were relocated to HDB flats. This chapter also explores how language policies emphasising Mandarin over dialects impacted the Teochew identity. Chapter 3: Hougang Politics is based on the identity of the place as a political entity. This chapter delves into the background behind the contestation of Hougang by Mr. Low Thia Khiang in the 1991 General Elections. Chapter 4: Managing A Town tells of the difficulties in the town council transition process as the MP of the constituency changed from a PAP to WP one in 1991. Mr Low and a former member of his team share the initial struggles in setting up a new town council office from scratch, and the steep learning curve in managing municipal issues and residents’ concerns. Chapter 5: People of Hougang foregrounds the kampung spirit evident in everyday interactions among residents. Former residents also share about their mixed emotions and a sense of personal loss towards the demolition of a long-cherished community landmark, the Simon Road Market, in 1999. They also reflect on how they feel about living in an opposition ward and experiencing delays in estate upgrades. They recount everyday challenges and sacrifices made by elderly residents and parents with kids in strollers who had to use the staircase in HDB flats as the estate had not been prioritised for lift upgrading in the past. Chapter 6: Hougang Spirit tells the story of the Hougang Constituency Education Trust, a community initiative established since 1992 that relies on private donor funding. The purpose of this trust is to give out annual bursaries to children from needy families. Former beneficiaries would come back to donate years after they had graduated, out of a desire to give back to the community. Like and subscribe for more content from WP.
