Watch this MOCA TALK exploring how a reform movement championed by imperial China’s most famous reformer took root across North America. Recorded on October 30, 2025, this conversation features authors and scholars Robert L. Worden and Jane Leung Larson discussing their monumental new reference work, "A Chinese Reformer in Exile." #ChineseHistory #KangYouwei #MOCATALKS #PoliticalHistory #AsianAmericanStudies The discussion covers how Kang Youwei and the Chinese Empire Reform Association (Baohuanghui) built a massive transnational network of over 160 chapters across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico between 1899 and 1911. The speakers reveal how these chapters founded schools, newspapers, and women’s associations, engaging in "retail politics" that reshaped the political imagination of a nation. The talk is moderated by filmmaker Evans Chan, whose work has helped revive global interest in Kang Youwei. ▶ ABOUT THE BOOK "A Chinese Reformer in Exile: Kang Youwei and the Chinese Empire Reform Association in North America, 1899 to 1911" (Brill, 2025) Open Access PDF and hardcover at https://brill.com/display/title/70307 This encyclopedic work documents the exile years of Kang Youwei and the rise of what was effectively China’s first mass political party. Drawing on five decades of scholarship—starting with Robert Worden’s 1972 dissertation—and newly uncovered archives, the book traces the Association’s role in pivotal moments like the 1905 anti-American boycott and constitutional petition drives. ▶ ABOUT THE SPEAKERS Robert L. Worden is a historian specializing in Chinese and Asian affairs with a Ph.D. from Georgetown University. He served in the Library of Congress’s Federal Research Division from 1973 to 2007, producing over 100 analytical studies. She previously served as executive director of the Northwest China Council and as an editor with the Committee of 100. Evans Chan (Moderator) is a critic and filmmaker whose works include "Chinatopia" and "Datong: The Great Society."
