Royal Pythons Amun and Amunet arrived at the ranch on 24 March 2021 to participate in habitat preference testing. The plan was to quarantine them in tubs as close to how the breeders housed them as possible and then to make a pass-through in each tub and place it into a fully furnished semi-naturalistic habitat enclosure and observe how much time they spent in the tub versus the habitat at large. I observed each snake during the time when it was normally awake and active. I observed stereotypies and stress behaviors from both snakes while in their tubs which included edging, nose pushing, hyperactivity, striking, pacing, attempts to get out of the tubs, coiling and freezing, hiding, and elevated respiration. The snakes slept or rested all day and then displayed stereotypies and stress behaviors during the time it was normal for them to be awake. I opted to move the snakes into chondro tubs which provided them with more space, more behavioral choices, and a clear front opening door which they could see out of. Initially each tub was furnished exactly as the bins: paper towel substrate, two hides, and a water dish. The added differences were perching, a ledge, and a clear front opening to see out of. A humidity hide was later added. All stereotypies and stress behaviors ceased and were replaced by climbing, exploratory behaviors, rectilinear locomotion, resting on ledges, perching, coiling around perches in a hanging down ambush posture, resting near the front door and looking out, and resting in or on top of the humid hide. This episode's pause in the story is for A Word on Welfare segment, followed by a mention of LIMA (least intrusive, minimally aversive), and of course our Royals in Your homes segment.
