日 1호 대미 투자 확정에 한국도 움직였다 실무단 미국행 As the U.S. ramps up its demand to allies to quickly initiate their investments into American industries, pressure is piling up for Seoul to finalise its talks with Washington, especially as Tokyo confirms the first projects. Oh Soo-young has more. Seoul is speeding up talks with Washington on a major investment package, as the Trump Administration ramps up pressure and Japan moves ahead on confirming its own first investment projects. According to South Korea's trade ministry a working-level delegation led by Trade Deputy Minister Park Jeong-seong departed for the U.S. on Wednesday. This comes amid expectations that South Korea's parliament will pass a Special Act on Investment in the United States by early March. Korean officials are expected to meet with the U.S. Department of Commerce in advance to discuss candidate projects and reduce potential differences, allowing Seoul to move quickly once the legal framework is finalised. Industry Minister Kim Jeong-gwan, meanwhile, is reportedly staying in Seoul to oversee negotiations, holding frequent consultations with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, including both in-person meetings and video calls. The push comes as the U.S. demands concrete investment plans from South Korea, and with U.S. President Donald Trump announcing Japan’s first three investment projects on Tuesday, pressure is mounting. Those projects mark the first confirmed tranche of Japan’s pledged 550 billion-dollar investment package under its tariff agreement with Washington. Of the 36 billion-dollar first-phase projects,.. 33 billion dollars will go into building a gas-fired power plant in Ohio, which will generate nine-point-two gigawatts of electricity. That's enough to power around 7-point-four million U.S. households. Japan will also invest in a deep-sea crude oil export facility in the Gulf of Mexico, and a synthetic industrial diamond production facility in Georgia critical for semiconductors and defense equipment. South Korea has pledged 350 billion dollars in U.S. investment as part of last year’s tariff negotiations, including 150 billion dollars dedicated to shipbuilding. The remaining 200 billion is set to be invested in sectors such as energy, semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, critical minerals, artificial intelligence, and quantum computing. A Seoul official said stable energy and power infrastructure remain top priorities for Washington, as electricity needs surge due to the AI boom and more data centers.
