• The secondary processes of photosynthesis do not require light, therefore called a dark reaction. • It is the second step of photosynthesis. • It takes place in the stroma of the chloroplast. • The dark reaction was first discovered by Blackmann (1905), hence also called as Blackmann's reaction. • It is light-independent but a temperature-sensitive phase, hence also called a thermochemical reaction. • It involves many enzymatic reactions taking place in living cells hence called a biochemical reaction. • Prof. Melvin Calvin (1954) was first discovered various reactions involved in the reduction of CO2 to form carbohydrates, hence also called as Calvin's cycle. Calvin was awarded Nobel Prize in 1961. • The first stable product of this cycle is 3-carbon containing PGA, hence also called a C3 cycle.
