Black kites were once very common in Taiwan, flocks of them soaring in the sky still remains a deep impression in the memories of old farmers. However, the wide use of the highly toxic carbofuran and anticoagulant rodenticides in the 1980s caused a dramatic decrease in the black kite population, with less than 200 individuals left in Taiwan in the 1990s, the crisis of secondary poisoning nearly drove them to extinction in mere decades.
