Online Talk: Scotland's volcanoes - East Lothian

Volcanic activity in the past has shaped Scotland as we see it today. Join Angus Miller for a series of three linked online talks exploring the volcanic activity of different areas of Scotland, linking the volcanic rocks from ancient eruptions to what we know about how volcanoes work from the study of recent eruptions around the world. The science of volcanology has been transformed over the last 40 years by a huge amount of research that has greatly expanded our understanding of how volcanoes work: we can apply that knowledge to Scottish volcanoes. In this talk, Dr Angus Miller (Geowalks) will explore the Volcanoes of East Lothian. A series of small volcanic vents, with accompanying ash layers, lava flows and intrusions are found along the coastline of East Lothian from Dunbar to Gullane, and inland. There are lots of interesting features to explore, and it is no exaggeration that the whole shape and human use of East Lothian has been influenced by these volcanoes. Recently, Brian Upton and colleagues at the University of Edinburgh have shown that there is more to the story, suggesting that one area of the coastline has evidence of a much later vent, hidden in plain sight.
