We checked the ingredient labels on 11 major frozen chip brands sold across UK supermarkets, and what we found was disturbing. Products marketed as "potato" croquettes containing just 51% actual potato. Wood pulp derivatives (hydroxypropyl methylcellulose) used as stabilizers in beloved British potato waffles. Four different types of flour layered into products that should simply be sliced potatoes and oil. Sugar added to nearly every product we examined — because when you coat chips in that much starch and flour, you need dextrose to fake the golden-brown color real potatoes develop naturally. While some brands are producing chips with 97% potato content using just four simple ingredients, others are selling heavily engineered products with yeast extract for artificial savory flavor, raising agents to create fake crispiness, and color extracts to paint on that "homemade" look. The gap between the best and worst products is staggering — and the worst offenders often come from the biggest, most trusted names. From McCain's half-potato croquettes to Birds Eye's wood-pulp waffles to Iceland's "ridiculously crispy" chemistry experiments, this investigation reveals how far frozen chips have strayed from what they're supposed to be. And why the cheapest supermarket own-brand option is often significantly better quality than premium branded alternatives. If you've never flipped over your frozen chip bag to check what's actually inside, this video will change how you shop. Watch before your next freezer aisle visit. Subscribe to Protect Our Plates 🇬🇧🍽️
