There is only one large rock art location in Ukraine. The complex of Kamyana Mohyla is exceptional due to its location on the western edge of the Eurasian Steppe belt. Not only is this a unique site of this kind for 1000 km, but it also mixes traces of European and Asian prehistoric art, having both portable and parietal rock art objects attributed from the Mesolithic to the Modern Age. Kamyana Mohyla was only recently studied with enough scrutiny when digital technologies were first applied to the surfaces of rock art objects. However, this research required developing new technological and methodological solutions that modified photogrammetric workflows and introduced new data on the region's prehistory. This talk will introduce Kamyana Mohyla in its extraordinary landscape, reveal the archaeological and rock art context of some motifs onsite, and tell the story of applying digital tools to the submillimeter details to disentangle some old hypotheses about the prehistoric art of Ukraine. Attention to the archaeology of the Ukrainian Steppe is even more critical as Russian invaders have occupied it since February 2022.
