Mate Rimac Reveals the Engine, Vision and Engineering of the BUGATTI TOURBILLON.

20 years after Bugatti invented the hyper sports car, it completely redefines the concept with an all-new powertrain and platform. This is the Bugatti Tourbillon plug-in hybrid hyper car. Like every Bugatti of the modern era, the Tourbillon ‘takes shape quickly’. The ability to travel at speeds in excess of 400 km/h requires every surface, intake and tread to be finely honed to ensure that it is beneficial not only for aerodynamics but also for the thermodynamics of the vehicle. While its design and proportions are beautiful, every surface, air intake and vent of the vehicle has been carefully designed to balance the immense aerodynamic forces of a car travelling at speeds in excess of 400 km/h, as well as the thermodynamic demands of a V16 engine, electric motors and battery operating at full performance. This new-generation Bugatti hyper sports car is powered by an all-new 8.3-litre naturally aspirated V16 engine, designed with the help of Cosworth, a front e-axle with two electric motors and an electric motor mounted on the rear axle. The Tourbillon produces a total of 1,800 horsepower, 1,000 of which comes from the internal combustion engine and 800 from the electric motors. This is an extraordinary achievement, considering that the Veyron gets 1,001 horsepower from its four turbocharged 8.0-litre engine and that the new V16 is fully naturally aspirated; it has been achieved thanks to a range of cutting-edge materials and technologies. Made from lightweight materials, the engine weighs just 252 kg. The electric motors are powered by a 25 kWh oil-cooled 800V battery located in the central tunnel and behind the passengers. All-wheel drive and full torque vectoring offer superior traction and agility. The front e-axle hosts two electric motors for a total of 800 hp from the electric powertrain and an additional motor at the rear axle. The electric powertrain, which spins the electric motors at up to 24,000 RPM and features fully integrated dual silicon carbide inverters, is one of the most compact powertrains in the world. The e-axles deliver over 6 kW of power per kg of e-axle mass, including inverters, motors and gearboxes. While power, throttle response and torque filling are the priorities for the electric powertrain, the relatively large energy content of 25 kWh provides a very usable all-electric range of over 60 km/37 miles. The Tourbillon offers significantly improved performance, a very powerful electric powertrain, a large battery pack and still weighs less than the Chiron, a testament to the incredible engineering behind the Tourbillon. With its lightweight construction and instant torque from the electric motors, the Bugatti Tourbillon delivers exceptional performance. Thanks to the combination of a highly advanced hybrid powertrain, lightweight engineering, efficient packaging and advanced aerodynamics, the Tourbillon will significantly reduce emissions compared to its predecessor, while improving the driving experience and taking the pinnacle of the automotive industry to new levels. The Tourbillon is designed around an all-new chassis and body structure. The structure is made from the latest generation T800 carbon composite, which incorporates a number of weight-saving innovations such as integrating the battery as a structural part of the monocoque and a unique crash composite rear diffuser inspired by top-level motorsport. The front composite air ducts running across the front of the car are also an integral part of the structure, ensuring that every part of the rigid, lightweight structure is optimised. The all-new chassis combines front and rear multi-link suspension forged from aluminium, taking its cue from the double-wishbone steel construction found on the Chiron. By opting for a new organically designed suspension arm and an upright structure 3D-printed from aluminium, the engineers have achieved a 45% reduction in suspension weight compared to the Chiron. The rear also features a hollow wing arm developed by artificial intelligence, 3D printed to improve vehicle dynamics and aerodynamic performance. The brakes are equally advanced, with state-of-the-art carboceramic technology. A bespoke brake-by-wire system has been introduced, fully integrated with the moving pedal box and seamlessly blended into the hybrid powertrain by Bugatti via a vehicle non-linear controller.
