Through extensive groundwater monitoring over the past 12 years, Caminos de Agua (Caminos) has uncovered dangerous levels of arsenic and fluoride in community wells in rural central Mexico. Caused by acute over-extraction of the aquifers, these pollutants cannot be removed by standard treatment options, and are known to cause a wide range of devastating chronic health problems. In response to this growing public health crisis, Caminos developed a low-cost, community-led, scalable solution called the Groundwater Treatment System (GTS), specifically targeting low-income rural populations. GTS is the result of years of research, development, and testing by Caminos and its academic partners. This award-winning technology has proven to be highly effective and sustainable, uniquely putting the power of water treatment into the hands of those most adversely affected. By leveraging existing treatment technology, as well as innovative new technology, GTS is able to remove dangerous contaminants, specifically arsenic and fluoride, from groundwater, while being directly operated, monitored, and maintained by the community itself.
