Joint the conversation at lc0.org/chat! This video talks about the progress that Leela Chess Zero has made since it was created as a clone of Google DeepMind's AlphaZero, and how it has greatly surpassed its predecessor, scoring major victories at the Computer Chess Championship (CCC) and Top Chess Engine Championship (TCEC) against top engines like Stockfish and Torch. I'm grateful to Hikaru Nakamura, Gothamchess and Magnus Carlsen for the kind words they have offered in support of the project as well as to the innumerable developers who have made the whole thing possible. Some more info about the comparison vs AlphaZero: The DeepMind team recently released a paper on transformer models in chess in which they provide an elo estimate of AlphaZero's playing strength against a transformer model which they release to the public, and I use this to estimate the elo without search. To estimate elo with search, I use a recreation of AlphaZero using a model with the exact same search and training hyperparameters and architecture (from Leela Chess Zero's T30 run), and have confirmed that the strength matches up with the statistics in that paper.
