A large eruption from Mount Semeru was captured on the morning of March 13, 2026, as the volcano explosively released ash and volcanic material from its summit crater in East Java, Indonesia. Semeru, standing 3,676 meters (12,060 ft) tall, is the highest volcano on the island of Java and one of Indonesia’s most persistently active volcanoes. It frequently produces explosive bursts of ash, gas, and volcanic debris as magma rises through the conduit beneath the summit crater known as Jonggring Seloko. The volcano sits along the Sunda Arc, formed by the subduction of the Indo-Australian Plate beneath the Eurasian Plate.
