A large eruption from Mount Semeru was captured on the morning of March 13, 2026, as the volcano explosively released ash and volcanic material from its summit crater in East Java, Indonesia. Semeru, standing 3,676 meters (12,060 ft) tall, is the highest volcano on the island of Java and one of Indonesia’s most persistently active volcanoes. It frequently produces explosive bursts of ash, gas, and volcanic debris as magma rises through the conduit beneath the summit crater known as Jonggring Seloko. The volcano sits along the Sunda Arc, formed by the subduction of the Indo-Australian Plate beneath the Eurasian Plate. This tectonic setting produces many of the highly active volcanoes across Indonesia. Semeru often erupts multiple times per day, but larger explosive events like this can send ash thousands of meters into the atmosphere and sometimes generate pyroclastic flows down the volcano’s flanks. Because of this ongoing activity, authorities maintain exclusion zones around the summit area. This footage captures one of the stronger explosions during the morning activity cycle on March 13, 2026.
