THE PLASTIC BAG STORE - Robin Frohardt First up, we’re checking out Robin Frohardt’s THE PLASTIC BAG STORE. A playful yet critical look at how much plastic we use in our everyday lives. Everything here, yes, everything, is made from plastic bags. It’s creative, colorful, and honestly a little eye opening. What I love is how it brings attention to something so ordinary, but in such an unusual way. Makes you think about what we throw away and how much of it stays with us. ROAD TO HYBRIDABAD - Osman Khan Next, we step into the future or at least, Osman Khan’s version of it with ROAD TO HYBRIDABAD. This installation feels like a collision of old tech and modern life. There’s a mix of neon lights, car parts, and electronic gadgets that feel strangely familiar. Khan is exploring how cultures and technology mix in unexpected ways. There’s a sense of movement and change, like we’re all headed toward this hybrid future, whether we know it or not. Really makes you pause and reflect. A WALL DRAWING RETROSPECTIVE - Sol LeWitt Moving on, we have a master of minimalism: Sol LeWitt. His A WALL DRAWING RETROSPECTIVE is exactly what it sounds like, massive, wall-sized drawings that are all about shapes, lines, and patterns. The simplicity here is what draws you in. It’s almost meditative, like you could get lost in these lines for hours. Every corner brings a new perspective. COSMIC LATTE - Spencer Finch Next is COSMIC LATTE by Spencer Finch. The warm light you see here represents the average color of the universe, the shade you’d get if you blended everything together. A reminder of how vast and connected everything really is. AUDIENCE - Amy Podmore Now, here’s something fun, Amy Podmore’s AUDIENCE. These sculptures are caught mid-reaction, almost like they’re watching us instead of the other way around." There’s something a little humorous and a little unsettling about being the one on display. It feels like these figures are reflecting back at us, maybe even mirroring our own reactions to the art around us. THE FIRE NEXT TIME - Steve Locke Here’s a more sobering moment, Steve Locke’s THE FIRE NEXT TIME. Inspired by the civil rights era and James Baldwin’s powerful writing, this piece leaves an emotional impact. It’s a reminder of the ongoing fight for equality and the deep histories behind these struggles. Heavy, but important. S-334473 - Sarah Oppenheimer Up next is Sarah Oppenheimer’s S-334473. It bends the space around you, shifting your perspective as you move through it. It’s a clever reminder that what we see depends on where we’re standing. HOT CORNERS - Amy Yoes Amy Yoes’ HOT CORNERS is another playful one, but with a more geometric, structured approach. The bold shapes and colors create this almost architectural feel, like the corners are coming to life. It’s lighthearted, but there’s a lot to take in visually. It’s the kind of piece that plays with your perspective as you move through it. IN ELUDING CAPTURE - Gulnur Mukazhanova Last but not least, we have Gulnur Mukazhanova’s work IN ELUDING CAPTURE. It’s complex and detailed, pulling you into a world of delicate textures. The tension between capture and escape is almost palpable in this piece. There’s a quiet intensity here that really draws you in. You could spend hours just contemplating all the layers. That’s a quick tour of just a few of the amazing exhibits at MASS MoCA from our last trip. There’s so much to explore here, and each installation brings its own unique perspective. If you’re into contemporary art, or even if you’re not, this place is definitely worth a visit.
