Georg Bachmayer was born on 12 August 1913 in Fridolfing, then part of the German Empire. He attended a public school for seven years, after which he worked as a laborer at a brick factory. On 30 January 1933, Adolf Hitler was appointed Chancellor of Germany by President Paul von Hindenburg. In April of the same year, Bachmayer joined the SS, and one month later, he became a member of the Nazi Party. In March 1938, Bachmayer took part in the Anschluss, which was the annexation of Austria into the Third Reich. In the fall of the same year, Nazi Germany annexed the Sudetenland, a border area of Czechoslovakia where the ethnic German population lived, and Bachmayer was among the troops that participated in the occupation. The Second World War started on 1 September 1939 when Germany invaded Poland, and by this time, Bachmayer had already been serving at the Mauthausen concentration camp, where he arrived in January of the same year. Mauthausen concentration camp had become operational from 8 August 1938, several months after the German annexation of Austria, when the SS transferred the first prisoners from the Dachau concentration camp. Living and working conditions in Mauthausen, as in Gusen, were harsh, which led to the death by murder, mistreatment, starvation, exposure, and disease of more than half of the prisoners. After his capture, Mauthausen commandant Franz Ziereis, recalled the inmates had been killed by gassing, hard labor, or through benzine injections or how at an outside temperature of minus 12 degrees they made the inmates bath in water and then stand in the open stark naked until they died. Some inmates had to haul stones until they collapsed, then they were shot, and their record was annotated "Trying to escape". From March 1940, Bachmayer served at Mauthausen as the protective custody camp leader and was responsible for all prisoners and the SS personnel tasked with camp administration and prisoner supervision. He also inspected the subcamps associated with Mauthausen, such as the Ebensee camp, the construction of which he was briefly in charge of in November 1943..
