The dramatisation is inspired by the memoirs of a real Victorian inspector in Scotland and follows McLevy as he navigates the shadowy streets of Edinburgh. Determined to bring criminals to justice, he is aided by his loyal sidekick, Constable Mulholland, played by Michael Perceval-Maxwell. Siobhán Redmond stars as Jean Brash, adding depth to the full-cast dramas. The series began in 1999 and has become a staple of the Afternoon Play slot, with its latest installment, Series 13, airing in 2022.
