Bullocks Wilshire building from 1929, 3050 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, designed by John and Donald Parkinson. The porte-cochère ceiling features "The Spirit of Transportation," painted by Herman Sachs, which celebrates modern modes of aviation and land travel. Motorcars are not depicted in the scene above because they were intended to meld into the tableau in real life as they entered the porte-cochère to discharge their passengers at the store entrance. This Art Deco treasure was specifically designed to cater primarily to customers in motorcars, rather than to pedestrian traffic, in what was at the time a suburban residential enclave. Bullocks Wilshire inaugurated luxury branding within the already existing company and, in its heyday, attracted the likes of Mae West, Marlene Dietrich, John Wayne, Clark Gable, Judy Garland, and other Hollywood luminaries. Southwestern Law School purchased the property with an eye toward restoration, and the building now houses their Law Library, a mock courtroom, and many other spaces for student and faculty use.
