The Garden City movement — a radical new way of designing towns. Green belts, communal ownership, and carefully planned neighbourhoods promised a healthier, fairer, and more beautiful way of living. Britain built just two true Garden Cities — Letchworth and Welwyn. They inspired countless imitations across the world, from Sweden to Japan, yet at home the dream faded into ordinary towns and suburbs. Even Gaudí tried to create his own version in Barcelona… and failed. So why did Britain stop building Garden Cities? And what can they teach us about how we design towns today? In this video, I explore the story of the Garden City movement, its global influence, and why the utopian dream of collective, alternative living never quite took root in England. 📍 Featuring Letchworth, Welwyn Garden City, Park Güell, and more.
