I took a little inspiration from the fanfic "Love was the Law" by ruinthatboy in AO3. Basically, the story follows them as they lose their minds in the rusty AU, a place where their minds are melting into one another and time no longer exists. Both Viktor and Jayce suffer hallucinations that make them see other versions of themselves, their memories getting mixed and interwind, as if they were both trapped in a dream and looking for one another. One day, for unknown reasons, Jayce is send to a timeline with a young Viktor in their lab. He takes this chance to give him one last kiss before disappearing. Their younger versions sleeping under a tree are just another layer of their dream that represents pure love. We don't know what their younger versions are dreaming, but we can see both adult and young versions are connected, since adult Viktor and Young Viktor shed the same tear by the end, and Jayce going back to sleep tells us he knows they are dreaming and instead of staying up decides to keep on dreaming besides Viktor and not leave him alone, forever looking for him. Sometimes young Viktor wakes up, but they are never awake at the same time, alas, only being able to be together in dreams, forever holding each other under a tree. The butterfly is supposed to be a guide that takes them through the path in which they end up together, but also the power of the arcane, it also seems to be represent both Jayce and Viktor. The boat represents Viktor desire of not being left behind/alone, referencing his toy boat.
